About USS Jack H Lucas

The USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG-125) will be an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, first of the Flight III variants and 75th overall in the class. She is named after Captain Jacklyn H. Lucas, recipient of the Medal of Honor. On 17 September 2016, she was named by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus. Jack H. Lucas was launched 4 June 2021, and christened 26 March 2022. The ship will enter the fleet and be commissioned October 7th, 2023 in Tampa.

Pascagoula, MS.

The Jack H. Lucas was built by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, MS. She left port there on December 12 and completed first of several ongoing sea trials December 15, 2022.

Arleigh-Burke Class

The Jack H. Lucas is an Arleigh-Burke class of missile destroyers (DDGs). With an overall length of 505 to 509.5 feet (153.9 to 155.3 m), displacement ranging from 8,300 to 9,700 tons, and weaponry including over 90 missiles, the Arleigh-Burke class destroyers are larger and more heavily armed than many previous classes of guided-missile cruisers.

A Navy First

The USS Jack H. Lucas (DDG 125) will be the Navy’s first Flight III Arleigh Burke-class (DDG 51) guided missile destroyer.  The Flight III upgrade is centered on the AN/SPY-6(V)1 Air and Missile Defense Radar and incorporates upgrades to the electrical power and cooling capacity. Flight III is the fourth Flight upgrade in the proud history of the class, and the largest upgrade to date.

Commissioning Week

If you've never been to the commissioning event when the U.S. Navy places a new vessel into our country's active fleet, it's a sight to see.  Thousands of people are expected to attend during the week culminating in the ceremony Saturday morning.  During commissioning week, Tampa will proudly play host to the USS Jack H. Who is Jack H Lucas

The remarkable story of Jacklyn Harold “Jack H” Lucas.

On 20 February, 1945, the second day of an assault on Iwo Jima - one of the most ferocious battles of the Pacific War - Private Jack Lucas, only seventeen, and three other U.S. Marines attacked a Japanese pillbox.  When two enemy grenades landed in their midst, Lucas jumped on one grenade and pulled the other under his body, saving the lives of his comrades.  Lucas was blown into the air as his body was torn apart by 250 entrance wounds. He was so severely wounded that his team left him for dead.
